Wire Rope Selection
 
Selecting proper type of rope is more complicated than expected. It is very
important to choose the right rope for its application because it plays a crucial
role for the life of the rope. The life of the rope can be doubled depending on
the selection. In order to choose the most proper type of rope, the characteristics
of the rope and other equipment in accordance with the working environment
must be considered first. They are breaking load (safety working load), flexibility,
corrosiveness, anti-abrasion, elongation (the modulus of elasticity), rotation,
form, and working temperature. These characteristics are often mutually contradictory
and no rope can comply with all the conditions. Therefore, it is the very tip to
consider the most important factor among all of the working condition in choosing
the most proper rope.

  • Ropes with fiber core of the rope are more flexible
  • Ropes with fiber core of each strands are more flexible
  • Point contacting wire type rope is more flexible than plane contacting type rope.
  • The more the number of wires make the rope more flexible.

  • Plane contacting wire type rope is more appropriate than point contacting wire type rope.
  • The more numbers of wires make the rope more flexible.
  • The more numbers of strands make the rope more flexible except for multi-layers ropes.
  • When there are too many wires, a wire can be easily worn out.
  • The more the number of strands, the more rotating characteristics, except for multi-layers ropes.

  • Plane contacting wire type rope has better breaking load than point contacting wire type rope.
  • The higher tensile strength of wires, the higher breaking strength.
  • Independent wire rope core has better breaking load than fiber core.
  • Plane contacting lay rope has better breaking load than point contacting rope.
 
Elongation
  • The fewer the number of wires, the less elongation
  • Point contacting wire type rope maintains less elongation than plane contacting wire type rope.
  • Fiber core shows more elongation, then IWRC and IWSC in order.

  • The smaller number of wires, the better anti-abrasion
  • Flattened type, swaged, and parallel wires ropes with flat surface are better in terms of anti-abrasion.

  • The longer the rope rolled, the more rotation
  • Using Z twist rope together with S twist rope helps to prevent rotation
  • Plain lay has less rotation than Langs'lay
  • The smaller radius of sheave groove, the more rotation
  • The smaller number of strands, the less rotation except for plural layers rope

  • Galvanized ropes are required in working environment where risk of corrosion exists
  • Ropes with smaller number of wires (thicker wires) are better in terms of corrosion
  • Rope grease has good aspect in terms of corrosion

  • Even though the working condition is agreeable, corrosion must be considered for a long time use
